Touchscreen Troubleshooting After Installation
Subaru Touchscreen Troubleshooting After Installation
If you installed a replacement Subaru touchscreen and something is not working correctly, don’t assume the new screen is defective.
Most post-installation problems are caused by one of three things:
-
The ribbon cable is not fully seated or perfectly straight.
-
The radio needs to be reset after installation.
-
The screen adhesive has not fully bonded to the radio frame.
The steps below solve most problems we see after installation.
Start Here: Check the Ribbon Cable
The ribbon cable is the most important connection between the new touchscreen and the radio.
A ribbon cable that is slightly crooked or not inserted completely can cause:
-
A completely unresponsive touchscreen
-
Ghost or phantom touches
-
Random buttons activating
-
The radio changing screens by itself
-
Physical buttons not working
-
Intermittent touchscreen operation
-
Strange behavior that looks like a defective screen
Important: The ribbon cable connector can click or lock even when the ribbon cable is not inserted correctly.
Remove the radio and check the ribbon cable carefully.
Make sure:
-
The cable is inserted completely.
-
The cable is perfectly straight.
-
The alignment marks or indents on the ribbon line up correctly with the connector.
-
The locking connector is fully closed.
If everything looks correct, disconnect and reconnect the ribbon cable one more time. It is worth checking twice.
Screen Is Blank After Installation
If the radio worked before the screen replacement but the new screen stays completely black:
1. Check the ribbon cable.
Make sure it is completely inserted and straight.
2. Power-cycle the radio.
Turn the vehicle off and disconnect the negative battery terminal for a few minutes.
Reconnect the battery and start the vehicle again.
A complete power reset often fixes a radio that does not initialize correctly after the screen has been replaced.
If the screen is still blank after checking the ribbon cable and power-cycling the radio, contact us.
Touchscreen Does Not Respond
If the display turns on normally but touching the screen does nothing:
The most likely cause is the ribbon cable.
Remove the radio and check that the touchscreen ribbon cable is:
-
Fully inserted
-
Straight
-
Properly aligned
-
Locked into the connector
Do not assume the cable is correct simply because the connector clicked closed.
If the ribbon cable has been checked carefully and the touchscreen still does not respond, try the reset procedure below.
Ghost Touches or Random Button Presses
Symptoms may include:
-
The radio changes screens by itself.
-
The Home, Radio, Map or other buttons activate without being touched.
-
The radio beeps as though someone is touching the screen.
-
CarPlay changes apps by itself.
-
The screen appears “possessed.”
-
The original ghost-touch problem seems to still be present.
This is usually caused by either the ribbon cable or the radio needing a reset.
Step 1: Check the ribbon cable.
Make sure it is completely inserted and perfectly straight.
Step 2: Reset the radio.
On many 2018–2019 Subaru Harman Kardon radios, press and hold the Volume and Tune knobs until the screen turns off.
Then press the Volume knob to turn the radio back on.
Some units may respond to holding the Volume/Power knob alone for approximately 15–20 seconds until the radio powers down or the side-button lights turn off.
Step 3: Disconnect the battery.
If the reset does not work, disconnect the negative battery terminal for approximately five minutes and reconnect it.
Step 4: Factory reset.
If the touchscreen is responsive enough to navigate the menus, go to the radio settings and perform a factory reset.
If the problem continues after all of these steps, contact us.
Touchscreen Works Only Sometimes or Touches Are Inaccurate
If the screen:
-
Works only part of the time
-
Requires multiple presses
-
Responds in the wrong location
-
Feels slow
-
Has inconsistent touch response
First perform the radio reset described above.
If that does not solve the problem, perform a factory reset through the radio settings.
If the problem continues, send us a short video showing what the touchscreen is doing.
Radio Buttons Stop Working After Installation
Sometimes the touchscreen works but buttons such as SEEK, RADIO, MAP, TEL or other controls stop working or work intermittently.
First check the touchscreen ribbon cable.
A crooked or partially inserted ribbon cable can affect both touchscreen operation and radio-button behavior.
Then reset the radio.
On many units:
-
Hold the Volume and Tune knobs until the display turns off.
-
Release the knobs.
-
Press the Volume knob to turn the radio back on.
The radio electronics can occasionally need to reinitialize after pressure has been applied to the buttons during installation.
Screen Corners Are Lifting
This is one of the most common installation issues.
The adhesive needs firm pressure while it bonds to the original radio frame.
When installing the screen:
-
Clean the mounting surface thoroughly.
-
Make sure there is no grease, dirt or residue on the plastic.
-
Apply firm pressure to all corners.
-
Keep the corners clamped or firmly pressed for at least 10 minutes.
-
A small amount of warmth can help the adhesive bond, especially in cold weather.
Do not overheat the screen or plastic.
If a corner keeps lifting
A few small drops of plastic-safe superglue behind the lifting area usually solves the problem.
Common superglues sold at hardware stores such as Lowe's or Home Depot work well as long as the product is suitable for plastic.
Use only a small amount.
After securing the screen, perform the radio reset if the radio developed unusual button or touchscreen behavior while the corner was loose.
Apple CarPlay Stopped Working After the Screen Installation
If the touchscreen works normally but CarPlay does not:
-
The short answer: the back of the radio has three identical black sockets. The vehicle's USB cable must be connected to the correct one. If it is plugged into either of the other two sockets, the radio can appear to work normally while CarPlay and Android Auto do not connect.

Radio Keeps Rebooting
If the radio continuously turns on and off:
Try a complete power reset.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal for several minutes and reconnect it.
You can also try holding the Volume/Power knob for approximately 15–20 seconds to force a reset.
If the radio continues rebooting after a complete power reset, contact us.
This may indicate a problem beyond the touchscreen itself.
Volume or Tune Knob Lights Do Not Work
The illumination LEDs for the radio knobs are part of the original radio electronics.
They are soldered to the radio circuit board and are not connected to the replacement touchscreen.
If a knob works normally but no longer illuminates, the LED itself may have failed.
This is separate from the touchscreen replacement.
